Mother’s day

Mother’s Day is a worldwide holiday celebrated to respect mothers and motherhood.

It is observed on separate days across various countries; but it is observed on the second Sunday in May in the United States and many other countries.

Mother’s Day will be observed on May 14th, 2023.

The holiday began in the United States in 1907, and it has since spread to many other countries.

While the holiday was intended to be a day of honour, it has come to be associated with the exchange of gifts and cards.

Story Behind Mother’s Day

It is observed on various days around the world, most commonly in the months of  May.

The modern holiday began in 1907; when Anna Jarvis held the first Mother’s Day worship service at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia.

Anna Jarvis created the holiday in memory of her mother, Ann Jarvis, who organised women’s groups to promote friendship and health.

The holiday has been chastised for becoming overly popular, and this was not Anna Jarvis’ intention.

Within five years, nearly every state observed the day, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared it a national holiday.

Although Jarvis promoted wearing a white carnation as a tribute to one’s mother.

The custom of wearing a red or pink carnation to represent a living mother or a white carnation to represent a late mother developed.

Over time, the time period expanded to include others who played motherhood roles, such as grandmothers and aunts.

How the ancients celebrated Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day was observed in various ways by ancient people.

The first celebrations can be traced back to ancient Greece, when people made dawn offerings of honey-cakes, fine drinks, and flowers to Rhea .

(Rhea was a Greek goddess, daughter of Uranus and Gaea, and mother to Demeter, Hades, Hera,  Hestia, Poseidon, and Zeus), the mother of the gods.

The Romans had a related celebration for Magna Mater, the mother of all gods.

During the festival on the fourth Sunday of Giving in honour of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ; early Christians noticed a sort of Mother’s Day.
